Removing/replacing jamb liners May 2, 2013
Reviewer: Doug from Upstate NY
I recently replaced the balancers on a dozen 40-year old Andersen double hung windows because of broken strings. By far, the most challenging part of the project was removing and replacing the lower right jamb liners without breaking and kinking them. If your windows are older, chances are the liners have become brittle and, in my case, the majority of them broke apart while removing them.

Luckily, I ordered new jamb liners when I bought the balancers and all of thenew ones went in without cracking and little or no kinking. However, the first few I did took quite a few tries. Then I sprayed both sides of the liner and the wooden jamb itself with silicone. Don't be afraid to use a fair amount of force with the new liners to get them between the sash and jambs. But, if you are reusing the old liners, be very careful not to crack them.

The liners are only about $14-$17 and it's well worth the cost. I now have a houseful of perfectly-operational windows.
